Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are a new class of crystalline porous polymers composed of light elements which are linked by strong covalent bonds. Their high surface areas and excellent thermal stability show great promise for a wide variety of applications in gas storage and separation, electronic devices, energy storage, and heterogeneous catalysis. The synthesis and studies of 2D COFs with layered eclipsed structures have been relatively well established. By contrast, the design, preparation and structural solution of 3D COFs are still considered to be a great challenge, and in particular these COFs with 3D networks have no well developed applications. Here we show the first example in which the imidization reaction is used to synthesize 3D porous crystalline polyimide COFs (termed PI-COFs). These porous PI-COFs features multiply interpenetrated structures that can be tuned by choosing tetrahedral building units of different sizes. Both PI-COFs show high thermal stability (>450°C) and surface area (up to 2403 m2g-1). Furthermore, we studied the application of both PI-COFs in controlled drug delivery, for which they show high loading and good release control.
