Abstract :

Introduction: Sudden cardiac arrest, a leading cause of death globally mostly happens outside the hospitals. Teaching Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) among lay persons might improve the outcomes of cardiac arrest. Despite efforts to train laypersons, their skill remains poor. Hence, assessing the attitude and barriers regarding CPR might help in skill development. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 180 laypersons aged 19 to 60 years in a village of Delhi. The study subjects were already had an exposure to CPR training. Attitude and barriers to perform CPR was assessed using a validated semi-structured interview schedule having statements on a 5 point Likert scale, and questions regarding barriers. Data was analyzed in SPSS 25 version.Subjects’ mean age was 36 ± 9.4 years. Males were 50.5% and 33% were educated upto high secondary. After teaching programme, majority (62.8%) of the subjects had favourable attitude towards CPR and showed confidence in providing CPR. 49.4% subjects were willing to perform CPR on the loved ones, however, 11.1 % disagreed on unknown persons. 40% of the subjects perceived fear of legal issues as the major barrier for performing CPR in a real situation. Intervention was effective in bringing a favourable attitude towards CPR. Fear of legal issue was perceived to be a barrier in performing CPR in real scenario. Such programme can be conducted to encourage laypersons to perform CPR in an emergency situation. Keywords: Lay person, CPR, attitude, barriers
