Predictable aesthetic results can be achieved for patients when implants are used to restore single tooth defects in the aesthetic zone. However, this is not the case when multiple tooth defects exist particularly with regards to the soft tissue contours between the implants and the contours between the implants and adjacent natural teeth. The foundation for the modern approach to aesthetic dentistry and smile design was laid by some of the founding fathers of complete denture prosthodontics i.e; Frush and Fisher as well as Pound in the United States, Preti in Italy and Gerber in Switzerland. They recognized that there are great variations in patient perceptions and individual anatomical forms and that what is aesthetically pleasing for one patient may not work for all. They advocated an approach in which realism is combined with aesthetically pleasing outcomes that are consistent with facial form, age, and personality type of the patient. The multiple tooth defects in the smile zone can be restored in a variety of ways that include conventional fixed partial denture, implant supported fixed partial denture, implant supported fixed partial denture that restore missing gingival tissues with laminated pink porcelain, implant supported removable overlay partial dentures. The method selected depends on a number of factors, including the size and nature of edentulous span, the health of potential fixed partial denture abutments, the nature of the hard and soft tissue deficits, the smile line, the predictability of surgical reconstructive procedures and cost. The aim of this scientific presentation is to bring forth the available data and clinical experience in this challenging field to present a rational approach to maximizing the aesthetic outcome of restorations designed for multiple tooth defects in aesthetic zone. Maninder Hundal, VSM is a Prosthodontist of established repute and is currently serving as the Executive Officer in the Indian Naval Dental Centre, Danteshwari at Mumbai which is a prestigious institute of the Indian Armed Forces. She has served the forces for 20 years now. She has been awarded with numerous awards by the Indian Army as well as the Indian Navy for her meritorious work in serving the organization in both field as well as peace establishments. She did her Bachelors in Dental Surgery from Govt. Dental College, Amritsar, Punjab in 1997 with a gold medal and her Masters in Prosthodontia from Armed Forces Medical college, Pune, Mumbai university, India in the year 2001-2004. She is an avid National and International speaker with numerous scientific papers and publications to her credit. She is also an affiliate faculty for the post graduate residents of Prosthodontics at the Army Dental Centre; Referral and Research, New Delhi as well as the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, India.
