Abstract :

Objectives:- Recently Research suggest most Adipokines promote cancer progression via enhancement of cell proliferation and migration via enhancement of cell proliferation and migration , Information and anti-apoptotic pathways, subsequently cancer metastasis.

Obesity and cancer progression related to adipocytokines has been well document in Literatures .but then role of such Adipokines in non obese subjects has not been Studied especially in oral pre cancer/ cancer. Oral sub mucous Fibrosis (OSMF) a pre cancerous condition , has a high rate of malignant Transformation .

The present study was designed to assess the Levels of adipokine chemerin in different grades of non obese OSMF patients and in OSMF patients with early malignant changes.

Methods:- This is a small cross sectional study consisting of clinically and histologically confirmed cases of OSMF and OSMF with early malignant changes. The OSMF patients were divided clinically info stage I to IV. Body mass index (BMI) were measured on WHO guidelines and only Non-obese were selected. Quantitative assay of human chemerin was done using sandwich enzyme Immunoassay technique.

Results:- Data was Statistically analyzed using SPPS. Chemerin values were compared between different groups using ANOVA. Since ANOVA showed significant differences between the groups (P=0.001) post Hoc Comparison between the groups was done using Tukey Test chemerin values were least in controls. It showed a high in grade IOSMF at 0.90 + 0.39 and thereafter a drop to 0.57 + 0.18 in grade II, 0.43+0.19 in grade III and then a rise to 0.67+0.41 in grade IV cases but highest values of chemerin were recoreded for OSMF with early malignant change 1.07+0.76.

Conclusion:- Our study indicated that chemerin in blood decreases as OSMF Progressen from early to advanced stage and then there is an abrupt increase as OSMF undergoes malignant transformation. Thus chemerin in serum or OSMF patients might help in predicting the progression of such pre-cancerous condition into malignancy.
