Pakistan is facing acute shortage of energy over the years which is adversely affecting its economic growth besides discomfort to the population. Pakistan is faced the challenges of rising population, increased number of motor vehicles on the roads, industrialization and urbanization leading to ever increasing demand for energy. It does not have its own energy sources and heavily depends on oil imports. Due to rising cost oi petroleum products in the world market, the import bill of oil is a big drain on its financial resources. Pakistan is searching for alternate source of energy. Biofuels offers number of benefits: environmental, economical and geo-political benefits. This paper is based on an in depth secondary research with the objective to reduce shortage of energy in Pakistan and thereby import of oil products. The research shows that biofuels can mitigate the energy shortage in Pakistan. Paper discusses issues related to the use of ethanol and biodiesel and concludes that use of biofuels in Pakistan can effectively tackle the problem of energy shortage and save money.
