Abstract :

The Clinical Scholars (CS) National Leadership Program is designed to expand the influence and impact of clinician leaders working to build a culture of health in the United States. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, interdisciplinary teams engage in a three-year development program consisting of onsite trainings, distance education, coaching, mentoring, and project-focused work. Participants apply as interdisciplinary teams and receive funding to implement projects in their home communities, addressing complex health issues, especially in regards to health equity. The curriculum focuses on developing skills to support partnership across disciplines, expansion of social networks, and strengthening connections to facilitate a cohort approach to solving wicked problems. Initial evaluative data from the first cohort, indicate high levels of trust and appreciation within project teams, high levels of trust developed with community partners through project implementation, significant growth in knowledge, self-efficacy, attitudes, and intent to use 25 targeted leadership competencies. We hypothesize that interdisciplinary networks will continue to expand throughout the three-year training for each cohort ΓΆΒ?Β?both inside and outside of the CS program, that cohort members will deepen their ties and facilitate transformative change in their communities, and that participants will provide evidence of the use of targeted leadership competencies in their work. Our aim is to equip clinician leaders with sophisticated leadership skills to develop and strengthen interdiciplinary partnership for addressing complex health issues, so that they will build a culture of health to improve health, equity and well-being in the United States.
