Objective: The main aim of the study is to compare the three different treatments and investigate the effectiveness of the common salt on umbilical granuloma. Methods: This retrospective study involved patients who were treated in our clinic for umbilical discharge disease between December 2015 and December 2016. The patients were divided to three subgroups according to treatment methods. Group I: Cases treated with only local common salt on umbilical granuloma, group II: cases treated with silver nitrate, group 3: cases treated with electro cauterization under intravenous anesthesia. Results: In this study, 75 patients with the diagnosis of umbilical discharge were treated in our clinic. The patients were classified into three groups; 28 patients of Group-1, 25 patients of group-2 and 22 patients of group-3. During 6-12 months of follow-up, no recurrences occurred in all 3 groups. The overall cure rate was 100%. No complication was observed during treatment. Healing time and resolution rates were identical for silver nitrate and common salt. Mild side effects were occasionally reported, all of which were self-limiting. Conclusion: In conclusion, we suggest that umbilical granuloma cases which are not complicated by abcess and cellulitis can be treated by local application of common salt and dressing without surgery. We conclude that application of common salt (table/ cooking salt) to umbilical granuloma is a simple, safe, efficacious and highly effective way of treatment without any relapse and complications. Parents at home can perform the administration of the agent conveniently. Treating umbilical granuloma with common salt at home is as effective as treating it with topical silver nitrate and surgery at medical center. This protocol could be considered to be the first line treatment for this disorder in neonates, infants and children.
