Content validity of Teacherâ??s Evaluation of Neuro Developmental Delays (TEDD) tool for Indian pre-schoolers

Abstract :

Statement of Problem â?? Early detection of developmental delays in children can significantly help them realise their full potential. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V), is the system in use at the moment to detect neurodevelopmental delays among children in the United States and other western nations. However, due to cultural differences, there is a pertinent need for a content validated module in the context of low- and middle-income countries, including India. The Purpose of this Study is To develop and validate TEDD tool based on the Criterions and Definitions of Neuro Developmental Disorders as mentioned in DSM-V and then synced with developmental milestones mentioned in ICD-10 and ECCE/NYCE framework, and items were worded in behavioural terms. Methodology and Theoretical Orientation â?? We did a thorough review of the literature for the development of TEDD tool and used modified Delphi technique to content validate it. Data from 9 experts, such as - Doctors, Clinical Psychologists, Special Educators, Speech and Language, and Applied Behavior Analysis Therapist were used for the analysis. Results â?? Analysis resulted into 28 items being retained which can be applied in the Indian context. RecommendationsThe study has shown good content validity of the TEDD tool. Future studies are being planned to rule the feasibility and reliability of this tool. Keywords â?? neurodevelopmental disorders, teachers, pre-school children, evaluation tool, India.

Sunanda Kolhe has her expertise in Early childhood development and Attachment and Childhood Trauma. Her TEDD tool based on the DSM V and ICD 10/11 Neuro Developmental Disorders criteria to screen Neuro Developmental Delays in PreSchool children will create new pathways for improving Early Identification and Screening and Intervention. She has built this model after years of experience in research, evaluation, and working with children both in hospital and education institutions. The scale development framework is based on De Velliâ??s Scale Development Model: Theory and Applications. The items of the tool and the theoretical concept of the tool is based on the Framework of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) and The National Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), existing Locally and Internally developed Screening tools.
