Diabetes mellitus is a rapidly growing, major public health problem with increasing incidence and long term complications. In spite of prodigious advancement in medical sciences, diabetes mellitus is still an incurable life-long disease and is swiftly increasing in all age groups, both gender and developing and developed countries. Currently, worldwide 382 million people have diabetes mellitus, and in every one minutes ten people died due to the complication of diabetes mellitus. Six countries in the Middle East including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman are among the world?s highest for the prevalence of diabetes. Diabetes is one of the world's most important causes of disability, morbidity, mortality, and causes a loss of about 548 billion US$ in year 2013. Science community paid a great attention on the various complications of diabetes mellitus including diabetic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and coronary artery disease, however, cognitive disorders failed to get the attention. Diabetes Mellitus impairs cognitive functions including memory, attention, thinking, processing, motor actions, immediate and delayed recall and academic performance. Physicians and researchers must consider the cognitive functions impairment in diabetic patients as serious as other complications of diabetes mellitus.
Sultan Ayoub Meo is a medical graduate [MBBS] with higher postgraduate degrees [M Phil] and Doctorate [PhD] in Physiology. He also received Fellowship (FRCP) of Royal College of Physicians of London, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. In addition to achieve MBBS, M Phil, PhD and four fellowships of highly respectable Royal Colleges of UK and Ireland, he also obtained higher postgraduate Degree, Master in Medical Education, University of Dundee, Scotland, UK. He has a teaching experience of about 22 years and actively involved in undergraduate and post graduate teaching in physiology and research. He is credited with 8 books and published 100 scientific papers published in peer reviewed national / International Journals. His area of interest in research is Respiratory Physiology, Diabetes and Endocrine disorders, Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Medical Education. Prof. Meo has been invited as a speaker and key note guest speaker to deliver talk in about 80 National/International conferences in different countries including Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kingdom of Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Turkey, China, UK and USA.
