Ectopia lentis in children: Our treatment option

Abstract :

Aim: To evaluate postoperative visual outcomes and complications following the novel technique of intra-scleral fixation of PCIOL in children without using suture, flap or glue. Materials & Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 12 eyes of 10 children with defective vision due to subluxation. The surgical technique was performed by a single surgeon. Small incision cataract surgery was performed and a 3 piece PMMA intraocular lens was implanted. Results: The mean age was between 6 years to 18 years and follow up period was 6 months. Preoperatively all patients had UCVA <5/60 while postoperatively 91.6% had UCVA better than 6/18 of which nearly 58.3% had UCVA>6/12 at 6 months. Preoperatively 50% of the patients had BCVA <=6/36. Postoperatively all patients had BCVA better than 6/18 of which nearly 75% had BCVA>=6/9 at 6 months. Early complications included hyphema, vitreous hemorrhage and optic capture. However there were no late postoperative complications. Conclusion: Our study has shown that surgery for ectopia lentis in children and young adults with intrascleral fixation of PCIOL without using suture, flap or glue gives excellent visual outcomes with few significant intra and postoperative complications. Long term follow-up may be needed for further assessment of stability of IOL. smitakapor21@yahoo.in
