Abstract :

Catalysis is an important area of research wherein focus is to improve the present catalytic systems and processes for a variety of organic transformations. Among the various catalysts employed for various conversion reactions, oxidation catalysts are used for the preparation of various industrially important chemical that acts as a building block for a plethora of chemicals of medicinal and day to day life uses. Among the various catalysts, graphene-based catalysts have attracted a lot of attention due to their ability to improve the catalytic performance of the present system by acting as a support or dopant. A variety of graphene-based catalysts have been prepared and comparative studies have been carried out to ascertain the role of graphene for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde using molecular oxygen as oxidant. It was observed that the catalyst yielded 100% conversion product at different reaction times, also that the percentage of graphene in the composite, the metal nanoparticles employed, calcination temperature and size of the nanoparticle play an important role in the catalytic performance of the catalyst. All the catalyst give >99 % selectivity to benzaldehyde and displayed excellent selectivity towards aromatic alcohols.
