Abstract :

In the last 40 years, Ob-Gyn science and practice changed due not only to technological advances but also sociological transformation. Doctors from an old era, like myself, felt challenged to face this new world of ideas and ideology. The rise of the third wave of feminism put old concepts in check. Cemented practices are now being questioned and terms such as obstetrical violence are used to describe some of those practices. The UN Women website defines feminism as a movement advocating for women’s social, political, legal, and economic rights equal to those of men. As it evolves, ‘Intersectional feminism’ presents various forms of discrimination based on race, class, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. The feminist women’s health movement empowered women’s knowledge regarding their health and battled against paternalistic and oppressive practices within healthcare systems. Activists fought to empower women’s knowledge, gain control over reproductive rights, and reclaim power from the paternalistic medical community. Obstetrical violence, a term coined in Latin America in the early 2000s, further emphasizes the rupture between practice and ideology, as deeming the doctor an unwanted, even dangerous appendix to the birth room. Medicine is the art of shielding humanity from suffering and death, as being so from time to time the shield got so badly beaten that it needs some fixing. In the oral presentation we will report a medical response to these confusing concepts, often at odds with current practice, and to further access this new paradigm, I used as a tool the discourse analysis from Foucalt’s masterpiece Naissance de la Clinique, trying to shed a medical gaze on the subject.
