The decoration of inorganic semiconducting nanoparticles on the side wall of the functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has great importance in nanotechnology especially for sensing applications. The main purpose of this research work is to increase the sensitivity towards the infrared radiation (IR) of the multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). So the side walls of the MWCNTs are modified by the zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles during this experiment. MWCNTs based zinc oxide semiconductor (MWCTs/ ZnO) nanostructures were synthesized through the bottom up approach known as co-precipitation method. Some spherical and elongated structures were observed. Samples of MWCNTs based ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized at different temperatures such as at 65°C, 80°C and at 95°C. Results showed that the major diffraction planes are having wurtzite structure. The SEM shows that by increasing the temperature of the samples, the ZnO nanoparticles made cluster of agglomeration on the walls of the MWCNTs. The internal morphology of the samples was studied by the TEM which shows that some of the particles were in spherical shape and some are elongated. The IR sensing response of the samples were measured by the resistance measuring instrument such as keithely meter 2100. There was observed a decrease in resistance and increase in infrared sensing response of the prepared samples.
