In ayurveda classical texts ginger is called “Shunthi”, as a common name. But there are other names which imply its significance.”Mahoushadha” means big medicine,”Vishwabheshaja” means ,medicine for the whole world. The fleshy root of shunthi,is known for its digestive property. In ayurveda abdomen is the cause and source of all diseases.Ginger dominates among all the ingredients in digestive preparations of Ayurveda, available in the market. Ginger is a laxative, without loss of water and minerals from intestinal flora. This is because it acts on large intestine, without any interruption in absorption process of nutrients in small intestine. If stronger purgatives are used in cases of constipation, leads to other ailments such as loss of appetite, nausea, decrease in normal intestinal movements, deficiency of some nutrients vitamins and minerals, loss of calcium and potassium, dependence on medicines for normal bowels, constipation with resistance to purgatives or laxatives, toxic effects of drugs.Once a purgative is used, thereafter it takes many more days for normal bowel habits reestablishment. If we are not understanding this particular fact, there is a chance of believing that constipation is still continuing .Again they become addicted to different purgatives creating a vicious cycle.Such people are attracted by fancy advertisements in media and surrender themselves to these medications.Even most of the doctors are also addicted to prescribe marketed purgative or laxative preparations ! It’s very important to note that causative factors like food habits and life style rather than medication. Anyhow, this is the most needed nowadays! Therefore, without leading to any unwanted effects, ginger relieves constipation. It improves the tonicity of intestine and facilitates intestinal peristaltic movements, the main key factor in regular bowel habits. The digestive properties of ginger is attributed to varieties of natural enzymes as its ingredients. The well-known British medical journal ‘The Lancet’,mentions that ginger is more powerful than Dramamine in preventing vomiting and nausea. Its also stressed that especially ginger prevents vomiting during travelling. Its estimated that more than 200 active ingredients are present in ginger. Therefore the names mahoushadha and vishwabheshaja in Ayurveda holds good always. Only thing is we should be self-motivated to consume raw ginger as condiment or at least 1 spoon of ginger powder daily with hot water or buttermilk or milk. Conclusion Therefore we can accept the benefits of ginger and turmeric on the basis of case reports, research and time tested ancient Indian traditional classics like Ayurveda for prevention and management of cardiac ailments, diabetes etc.
