Abstract :

The aim of this study is to inform healthcare providers who interact with milleninials and post-milleninals who, by and large, are living and mating in what has been coined a â??hookup cultureâ?. The factors leading to a transition from the predominately dating culture of yesterday to the hookup culture of today will be reviewed. The newest technologies, beyond texting, such as Tinder and Grindr that facilitate hookup behaviors will be detailed. Emerging evidence, exploring the full range of potential emotional, mental, and physical health issues, along with negative social consequences with hookups will be discussed. This includes the speakerâ??s own scholarly work on this topic through a needâ??s assessement survey at her clinical practice setting. Health issues with hookups may include: sexual regret, relationship/interpersonal conflict, negative emotional reactions, negative social repercussions, learning to â??shut downâ? emotionally, pyschological distress, anxiety, depression, and STIâ??s. Also some are left with disappointment when a hookup does not lead to a relationship as hoped. Important questions for discussion include: Are women at higher risk for negative experiences in the hookup culture or is this hookup culture a sign of the sexual empowerment of women? How does alcohol fuel the decision to enagage in a sexual hookup? Is there a relationship between hookups and sexual assault? Do parents, educators, healthcare providers need to discourage hookup behavior or just encourage safe sex practices that minimize STD exposure?
