It seems obvious, but following a methodical pattern to troubleshooting makes the job much quicker. Start at the solvent inlet and follow the fluid path, changing one variable at a time � this allows you to pin-point the source of the problem. Don�t blame the column immediately! Keep an open mind. About 90% of all column complaints are not related to the column. This presentation deals mainly with the column, but mention will be made of solvents, filtration & sample preparation Good maintenance of your HPLC/UHPLC system will avoid or minimize most problems and lead to reliable results.
Gerhard Kratz has completed his studies at University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. His dissertation was about Planning, calculation and construction of a Fluidized bed reactor. Deepening during his studies was Water economy, chemical technology, plastic technology, varnish and paints, oil processing. First positions in industry were in pharmaceutical industry doing HPLC method development on various HPLC brands. Specialized in HPLC column selection and teaching customers in troubleshooting all over the world, he is supporting several internet forums for HPLC questions.
