Abstract :

This study evaluated and correlated the effect of diet on sperm parameters, DNA fragmentation and chromatin maturity in vegetarian and non-vegetarian groups. This is prospective study included total 202 men attending University Infertility Clinic for their routine semen analysis, although, the variables in both the groups vegetarian (n=32) and non-vegetarian (n=170) widely vary. Upon liquefaction, the samples were mixed well and evaluated according to WHO guidelines. Sperm DNA damage and sperm chromatin maturity were assessed by sperm chromatin dispersion assay (SCD) and Terquem and Dadoune (Aniline blue) methods respectively. In the result, we found that grade I and II viscosity, volume, % of progressive motility and sperm DNA fragmentation were increased in vegetarian while grade III viscosity and % of non-progressive motility were increased in a non-vegetarian group but values are statistically not significant (p>0.05). The other sperm parameters do not vary at all. So, an addition of more subjects and detail investigations are required to validate the result.
