Abstract :

Novel Coronavirus (Severe Acute Respiratory Distress-CoV2) was first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Covid-19 was declared a pandemic by the WHO on 11th of March 2020. This new disease caused by a novel virus with survival and transmission abilities far greater than anything mankind had seen in a hundred years posed a public health threat so dire, that countries had to be shutdown. The myriad of manifestations it brought with it posed numerous challenges to the scientific community. The most commonly reported clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are fever, myalgia, cough, dyspnea, and less frequently, headache, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Serious disease outcomes are dependent on the ability of the virus to bind to the ACE 2 receptor which facilitates entry into epithelial cells. This can lead in the lungs to a severe host hyperimmune response with a life-threatening cytokine storm resulting in the systemic inflammatory response syndrome. In the gastrointestinal tract the mechanism is similar, and evidence for infection by SARS-CoV-2 has come from hospitalized patients who tested positive for the virus in stool. This study included 12 covid patients who presented with symptoms of abdominal pain and later intestinal obstruction. 2 patients had respiratory involvement with CORADS score of ≥4, 5 had CORADS 3 and 5 patients <3. All the patients in this study had intestinal gangrene as an intra-operative finding. There was mortality in 4 patients and 8patients recovered.
