Abstract :

Intraosseous access (IO) is of paramount importance in Emergency Medicine. It is an easy and lifesaving intervention. It is installed within 30 seconds with a relatively simple procedure. It is an established method in children and is beginning to be used in adults as well. It is applied primarily in cardiorespiratory arrest for the immediate administration of Adrenaline but also in hypovolemic shock after dehydration, trauma or septic shock. Intraosseous needle is used to deliver fluids, blood products and medicines, as well as intravenous administration. In cases of unsatisfactory flow, a pressure bag is used. 93.9% success rate of needle insertion from the first attempt is reported. Complications include extravascular or sub-periosteal infusion, local infection, osteomyelitis, skin necrosis, compartment syndrome, and fat and bone marrow embolism. Infants and toddlers are at higher risk for poor placement.
