Abstract :

Mitral valve disease mainly stenosis is the most common cause of mitral valve obstruction. The commonest cause in developing countries is rheumatic inflammation of the mitral valve; the normal value motion is affected as the valve opens partially with loss of biphasic movement. However less common causes are left atrial myxoma, mitral annular calcification, left-sided carcinoid heart disease and other congenital disorders. Mitral stenosis when it is due to the rheumatic process can be managed by percutaneous Trans Venus mitral commissurotomy. Echocardiography remains the most important investigation in diagnosing the extent of the disease and planning the management of mitral stenosis. This review highlights in brief the mitral stenosis from diagnosis to a complete stepwise approach for comprehensive assessment of mitral stenosis by echocardiography.
