Patient's perceptions of importance for self -administered correct site surgery checklist: A multisite study

Abstract :

Problem: Wrong site surgery occurs over 40 times per week in hospitals and clinics in the United States resulting in catastrophic situations for both the patient and surgeon. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe and evaluate patients’ perceptions of importance of patient involvement and responsibility for safe surgery using a self-administered correct site surgery checklist. Design: A multi-site non-experimental, quantitative, descriptive study Methods: A convenience sample of 173 adult patients and who were scheduled for surgery with laterality from the 4 academic and community Medical Centers in different geographic sites were obtained. Institutional Review Board approved protocol. Research Team member explained purpose of the study/process and obtained consent from volunteered participants. Participants rated survey questions using a four point Likert Scale from 1 not important to 4 extremely important before and day of surgery.
