Abstract :

Family Lamiaceae is represented in India by 64 genera and 340 species of which 18 % are endemic. Many Lamiaceae plant species such as basil (Ocimum ), Lavender ( Lavandula), Mint ( Mentha ), Oregano ( Origanum ), Patchouli ( Pogostemon ), Rosemary ( Rosmarinus ) and Thyme ( Thymus ) have been used in different Traditional Systems of Medicines, used commercially and also studied Phytochemicaly and Pharmacologically. Yet there are quite a few species which are either underexplored or unexplored phytochemicaly and also for their different pharmacological activities. Phytochemicaly and pharmacological studies of such plants have tremendous potential to yield novel bioactive molecules. These can be taken up for the development of Phyto- products. Investigation of selected Lamiaceae species from the Western Ghats which has lead to the isolation of a number of novel and also known molecules which will be presented. Some of these molecules have represented biological activities such as anti-mycobacterial, cytotoxic, mosquito control (larvicidal and repellent).
