Abstract :

Preterm birth is still a global problem throughout the world. Indonesia ranked 5th out of 10 countries with the highest rate of preterm births, which are 6,75,000 births, and ranked 9 out of 10 countries with preterm births per 100 live births which are 15.5%. The etiology of preterm labor is multifactorial. Most of the case the reaction is similar then the reaction caused by activation of inflammation pathologic pathway, which is marked by an increase of aberrant cytokine production. Nutritional deficiencies were one of the factors that play a role in preterm labor. Malnutrition over or undernutrition, and/or micronutrient deficiency causes intrauterine inflammation. In particular, folic acid, vitamin A, B12, C, D, zinc, iron, copper, and omega 3 fatty acid deficiencies, mainly DHA, during pregnancy is known to contribute to the increase risk of preterm labor and preconception supplementation are proven to reduce preterm delivery. Our previous study showed serum zinc and vitamin D deficiency in 75% and 99% in 100 pregnant women in their first trimester. In this seminar, I will present our study about the roles of placental zinc, vitamin A, and D in inflammation response from patients with preterm birth.
