Abstract :

Prevention through Vaccination Cervix
� Lower part of the uterus
� Connects the body of the uterus to the vagina (birth canal) Burden of disease
� Globally, each year:
� 500,000 women are diagnosed with Cervical Cancer
� 270,000 women die due to Cervical
� In India, each year:
� 1,32,000 women are diagnosed with Cervical Cancer
� 74,000 women die due to Cervical Cancer
� It is even more common than breast cancer
� Cervical Cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer related death amongst women in India
� WHAT CAUSES CERVICAL CANCER
Summary
� Cervical cancer is the No. 1 cause of Cancer related death amongst Indian women.
� Screening, until recently, was the only way to detect abnormalities and prevent Cervical Cancer
� Although effective, screening has its limitations (reliability, cost and compliance)
� Vaccination offers a new alternative in preventing an infection that may lead to Cervical Cancer
� Vaccination alongside screening could further reduce the burden of Cervical Cancer
