Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare neurological condition that can cause problems with walking, balance, movement, memory, vision, eye movement, speech and swallowing. The disorder results from damage and deterioration of the brain cells that control body movement, coordination, thinking and other important functions. Progressive supranuclear palsy is also called Steele-Richardson- Olszewski syndrome. The PSP Association estimates there are around 4,000 people with PSP living in the UK. But it is thought the true figure could be much higher as many cases may be misdiagnosed. Most cases of PSP develop in people who are over the age of 60. Awareness of this disease is becoming an important issue over time as the majority of cases has been misdiagnosed. At the time of diagnosis, the patient had reached an advanced stage of the disease. Progressive supranuclear palsy gets worse over time and can lead to life-threatening complications, such as pneumonia and swallowing problems. There is no cure for progressive supranuclear palsy, so treatment focuses on managing the signs and symptoms. It is becoming an important job for health care professionals and the community to recognize the symptoms and be aware of early signs that might be similar to another neurological condition in order to help the patient and improve his quality of life. In this presentation, we are going to talk about different aspects of the disease and how can we recognize early signs and symptoms, what investigations to look for, and who can we consult with, and what are the treatment options we have at each different stage. Also, we are going to talk about a description of a challenging case report. A discussion and a brief summary of the case and a conclusion
Dr. Reema Sharaf is a consultant in the department of restorative dentistry at Prince Sultan Medical Military Hospital Dental Center in Riyadh city. Dr. Reema received her Bachelor of Dental Surgery B.D.S degree from King Saud University College of Dentistry in Riyadh. She worked as an intern in various hospitals including the College of Dentistry and Riyadh Dental, as well as Riyadh Armed Forces Hospital and Riyadh National Guard Hospital where she gained immense experience in the field. Dr. Reema received her Advanced Education in General Dentistry certificate, AEGD, from University Of Southern California School Of Dentistry at Riyadh- Al Kharj Hospital program. She later obtained the Saudi Specialty Certificate in Restorative Dentistry SSC-(Dent) Resto former the Saudi Board in Advanced Restorative Dentistry SBARD. She has attended numerous workshops and training courses on advanced techniques in restorative dentistry, esthetic dentistry, dental Implant, and laser all over the world, as well as the latest developments in dentistry. As a result, she has become a highly qualified expert in restorative dentistry and is especially knowledgeable of such subjects as Endodontics, Restorative dentistry, Prosthodontics, Laser dentistry, Dental Implants and oral health education. She is passionate about working with interdisciplinary teams on full mouth rehabilitation cases.
