The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy defined an epileptic seizure in 2005 as a transient occurrence of signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Psychiatric disorders co-occur very frequently with epilepsy. It may pre-exist even before the onset of epilepsy, may be the cause or the consequence of epilepsy, and may occur any time during the course of the disorder. Various population studies have reported a prevalence of psychiatric disorders ranging from 5.9% to 54.9%, maximum being 80% in some patients of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE). There is a paucity of data on the treatment of psychiatric issues in epilepsy patients due to lack of systematic studies. The time diagnosis of psychiatric disorders in epilepsy and effective management of these disorders are advantageous for the patient in terms of improved drug adherence, better functioning, and quality of life.
