As Japans population declines, there is an increasing demand for care products in both domestic and overseas markets. For meeting this demand, product development should be geared toward local preferences and lifestyles. Thus far, basic cosmetic researches have been conducted in different countries. While some studies have explored the different characteristics of skin and hair among the people of different countries, few studies have examined the scalp in this context. This may be one of the greatest bottlenecks in the development of scalp care products in both domestic and overseas markets. For assessing the impact of climate or lifestyle on scalp characteristics, we evaluated the scalp sebum samples of women from the following four nationalities: Chinese, Thai, American, and Japanese. We found that the lipid compositions of the scalp sebum collected from each country were significantly different. For details on each differences, see the poster.
