Abstract :

Cancer is a disease in which cell division is uncontrolled and spread within the body in an abnormal form where it causes danger and threat to life by local or distant invasion. One of the known scientifically proven ways to combat cancer is via chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has been the main modality of treatment for cancer patients; however, its success rate remains questionable because of limited accessibility of drugs to the abnormal tumor tissue, patient intolerability and the cumbersome issue of multi-drug resistance which is accounted for by the continuous heterogeneous biology of the growing tumors as a form of adaptation and toxic systemic adverse effect. These problems in recent years as technological advancement ensues is now being put in check by targeted drug delivery which explains the predominant drug accumulation within a target or affected zone independent on route or method of administration. This article reviews the development, achievements and limitation for targeted drug delivery in cancer therapy.
