Aim: The aim of the study was to determine of the experiences of nursing students in an orthopedic surgery unit. Method: This descriptive study was conducted at an orthopedic surgery unit in a university hospital. The participants of the study were first year nursing students attending to a school of nursing. This study was carried out after written ethical approval was obtained from the ethical committee of the military education and research hospital and application permission was granted by the nursing school. The study was conducted there were a total of one hundred-six (106) first year nursing students. Data were collected using the data collection form. It included some characteristics information of nursing students and ?The clinical stress questionnaire (CSQ)?. The clinical stress questionnaire is a self report Likert- type instrument that was developed by Pagana in 1989 for the purpose of determining the beginning stress value that is threatening or challenging to nursing students in their first clinical experience. Descriptive statistics were used. Results: All participants of the study were female nursing students. Their mean age was found to be 21.03�0.26 years (min: 20max: 22). Students? stress score was 27.49�9.16 (min: 5 max: 56). 93.4% of nursing students (N = 99) stated that they had found the opportunity to apply or observe most of the interventions taught in the class. The most frequency of nursing diagnoses determined by the nursing students were ?pain?, ? anxiety ?, ?lack of self-care? for the patients with plaster / splint in the orthopedic surgery unit. Conclusion: This study dealt with the first day experiences and clinical stress of the first year nursing students during the orthopedic surgery unit.
