Abstract :

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness among diabetic patients worldwide. Early detection of DR in its asymptomatic treatable condition is crucial. Our aim is to report in which stage of DR our patients are presenting to Tripoli Eyes Hospital Clinics. So a prospective cohort study of 490 patients with diabetic eye disease for one year duration who had been presented at Tripoli Eyes Hospital was included in this study and a comprehensive ophthalmic examination was done. We found that the majority of patients were age 50 years an above, about 37 (7.6%) was 50 years and 36 (7.3%) was 60 years. A 12% of them were diabetics for 10 and 20 years and commonest presenting diabetic retinopathy was proliferative diabetic retinopathy (33.1%), followed by no diabetic retinopathy (23.1%) and the least common was severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (3.1%). From that, due to the sight threatening potential of DR and the availability of methods to slow down the rate of disease progression, a proper screening at an appropriate time is recommended.
