Abstract :

Septic shock is a life threatening clinical syndrome that, remains a leading cause of maternal mortality despite its rare occurrence in Obstetrics. Th e literature was scrutinized from diff erent sources including Pubmed. Th is is being related to infection from obstetric origin ( septic abortion, chorioamnionitis, puerperal sepsis) or non-obstetric ( resulting from infections which occur in other areas). Septic abortion most commonly results from trauma to the uterus and bowel caused by illegal induced abortion. Th e clinical presentation and the methods of monitoring the patient with septic shock are discussed. Several ancillary treatment of sepsis and septic shock published in recent systematic reviews are discussed. Prevention of septic shock is the best way to eradicate the highly reported mortality rates. Early recognition, prompt diagnostic work up, and immediate initiation of therapy enhance patient survival. Th is area has received little attention and it is important that caretakers of critically ill pregnant women be cognizant with this entity and apply the knowledge for therapeutic intervention.
