Use of a syringe cone: A new alternative technique for molluscum contagiosum curettage

Abstract :

Introduction: It is a pathology that accounts for 10% of my consultations. It is a self-limiting cutaneous viral infection in immunocompetent patients, leaving to the physician’s discretion which patients should be treated, however there are depply detailed description of the many treatments used today since years old.
Conclusion: Molluscum contagiosum is a disease in children characterized by small skin-colored umbilicated papules. Although spontaneous resolution is common, many parents and patients seek treatment. Multiple therapeutic modalities have been described. I insist on the need to treat MC whenever possible, because I have observed many complications from not doing so, such as keratoconjunctivitis and chronic follicular conjunctivitis, eczematization, pyoderma, abscesses, erythema multiforme, and anetoderma. The release of elastase from inflammatory cells recruited through complement activation produces anetoderma. Topical use of topical drugs has been reported to cause local irritation, psoriasiform eruptions, ulcerative stomatitis, pharyngitis, lymphadenopathy, abscesses, pruritus, erythema, burning, and desquamation and febrile episodes. Children do not usually tolerate cryosurgery well, in addition to which it has the potential risk of residual hypopigmentation. The frequency of these side effects, and sometimes their severity, has led us to avoid the use of these drugs for several years now In terms of therapy, I prioritize curettage after application of topical anesthesia as first-line treatment. Although it is not free from complications such as recurrences and bleeding, in my experience, these are less frequent and severe than complications of other used techniques. I present an easy, safe, caregiver-friendly and the cheapest, modified curettage technique using a syringe cone which is described for the first time.
