Dr. Alan Holmes is a Senior Research Associate and Group Leader in the UCL Division of Medicine. He held Visiting Fellow positions at UCL, the MRC NIMR, FibroGen and the NIH. He was a Research Associate at UCL before becoming Lab Head at Novartis in 2006. He joined UCL as Group Leader of the Centre for Rheumatology and Connective Tissue Diseases in 2011.
His major research interests are in the remodeling processes that contribute to pulmonary vascular pathologies, with the main research interests laying in understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that contribute to pulmonary hypertension (PAH) and fibrosis, including diseases such as systemic sclerosis (SSc). The work has focused broadly on the role of the TGF-beta super-family of proteins and their contribution to the initiation and progression of tissue remodeling and disease. Recent work has specifically focused on using pharmacological and transgenic approaches in pre-clinical models of fibrosis and PAH to better understand the key pathological mechanisms that lead to the development of PAH in SSc.
