Chemotherapy resistance occurs when cancers that have been responding to a therapy suddenly begin to grow. The causes are mutations, gene amplification, active pumping of the drug by p-glycoprotein, inactivation of the drug by the cancer cells and repair the DNA breaks caused by the drug.
