Geriatrics and gerontology are distinct yet interconnected fields dedicated to understanding and addressing the complexities of aging. Gerontology, as a scientific discipline, encompasses the study of the biological, psychological, and social aspects of aging. It delves into the mechanisms of senescence, the exploration of age-related changes in physiology, cognition, and behavior, as well as the societal implications of an aging population. In contrast, geriatrics is a medical specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases in older adults. Geriatricians possess a comprehensive understanding of age-related physiological changes, chronic conditions, and the polypharmacy often associated with older patients. While gerontology provides the foundation for understanding the aging process, geriatrics applies this knowledge to clinical practice, emphasizing holistic care and optimizing the quality of life for older individuals. The synergy between these two fields is essential for advancing research, developing effective interventions, and improving the health and well-being of the aging population.
