Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the Streptococcus pneumonia. Infection can result in pneumonia, infection of the blood (bacteremia/sepsis), bacterial meningitis including inflammation of the middle ear with accumulation of fluid in the middle ear, swelling of the eardrum, earache. Non-bacteremic pneumonia of the lower respiratory tract spread to the blood stream.
