Tympanometry is one of several tests that audiologists call "immittance" tests. A tympanometer measures the acoustic immittance in the external auditory meatus as a function of air pressure within the external auditory meatus. Tones are "bounced" off the tympanic membrane to determine the amount of sound that is reflected back through the ear canal.
Tympanometry assists in the detection of fluid in the middle ear, perforation of the eardrum, or wax blocking the ear canal. Tympanometry pushes air pressure into the ear canal, making the eardrum move back and forth. The test measures the mobility of the eardrum.
