Clive Pai, PhD, MPT, is a professor from the Departments of Physical Therapy and Bioengineering at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). He received Master of Physical Therapy from Northwestern University (NU) in 1996 and PhD from the University of Iowa in 1987. He is a fellow of American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Dr. Pai joined NU faculty in 1987, then UIC in 2000. Supported by Arthritis Foundation, his work focused on the neuromechanical control of joint stability that may reduce the likelihood of rapid progression of knee osteoarthritis. While this line of work became flourishing at NU, he was sidelined from what he has initiated. His subsequent work centered on developing a novel “vaccination-like” approach to reduce the likelihood of falls among older adults, relying on their adaptability (plasticity) of movement stability, its retainability and generalizability. This line attracted four consecutive (R01) funding from National Institute of Health in a 20-year span.
