Paul N. Efthymiou

Biography

Born in Ano Stavros, District of Thessaloniki, Northern Greece in 1945. He earned a M.Sc. Degree in Forestry Science from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki after a 10 semesters study 1963-1968, with an overall grade "Excellent 9 (max.10)". Research and Teaching Assistant 1968-72. Postgraduate studies at the Institute of Forest Utilization and Work Science, Albert-Ludwigs-Universitaet Freiburg i.Br. West Germany 10/1972 - 01/1977, taking advanced courses and research on Appliad Mathematics and Statistics, Operations Research, Systems Analysis, Modelling and Optimization,Harvesting, Work Science, Ergonomics and Planning of Wood-working industries in the framework of an Integrated Forest Products Utilization. This led to my Dr. rer. nat.-Thesis: "Systems Research in Forest Utilization - Methodology of the Feasibility Study of Pine-Plywood from SW-Germany" 348 p.(01/1977), with the overall note "Excellent - Magna Cum Laude".

Supervising Forest Engineer at the Forest Directorate of Drama, North-East Greece 1977-80, Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Forests, Athens 1977. Head of the Dept. of Forest Engineering and Forest Utilization at the Forest Research Institute of Northern Greece, Vassilika 1980-1997. Professor of Forest Products Harvesting, Non-Wood Forest Products, Ergonomics, Systems Analysis and Research Methodology (on Postgraduate level),at the Faculty of Forestry and Natural Environment of Aristotle University Thessaloniki 04/1990 - 07/2012. Emeritus Professor since 10th July 2012.National representative of Greece (State Forest Service at Min.of Agriculture) to the Joint UN-FAO/ECE/ILO Committee on Forest Technology, Management and Training, for North-America, Europe and Russian Federation 1974-2004. Chairman of this Steering Committee 1994-1998 and Coordinator of Mediterranean Forestry 1988-2004.Regular member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the European Forest Institute (with 140 members Forestry Faculties and Research Institutes) for the period 1993-2000. Advisor of the European Commission and the European Parliament on Foresty, Cork and Wood Industries issues, 1998-2005. Co-Chairman at the Working-Group  3-04-02: "Work Studies, Payment and Labor Productivity" of IUFRO 1986-90. Senior Member of the Society of American Foresters (1987-2010),and Member of Deutscher Forst-Verein (DFV 1977-97) and Kuratorium fuer Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik (1972-2014).
