Background: The association between certain systemic diseases and ABO blood group has already been well established. However, studies are lacking which seek the relationship between ABO blood group and periodontitis. Therefore, the present study aims to evaluate the association of ABO blood group and Rh factor with chronic periodontitis.
Materials and Methods: A total of 317 chronic periodontitis subjects aged between 30 - 55 years visiting the department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology were recruited for a study by purposive sample technique. Chronic periodontitis was diagnosis when there was a presence of 3 or more teeth with 1 or more sites with probing pocket depth (PD) >3mm and with clinical attachment (CA) loss ≥1mm. Patients with CA loss of 1-2mm were categorized as mild periodontitis, 3-4 mm CA loss as moderate and ≥5mm of CA loss as severe periodontitis. The clinical parameters examined were plaque index (PI), (PD) and (CA) loss. The patient’s blood group was determined by slide agglutination technique.
Result: The incidence of mild periodontitis in blood group A, B, AB and O was 41%, 30%, 16% and 12.2% respectively. Similarly, the incidence of moderate/severe periodontitis in blood group A, B, AB and O was 25.6%, 36.1%, 18% and 30% respectively.
Conclusion: The mild type of periodontitis was higher in patients with blood group A whereas the moderate/ severe periodontitis was higher in blood group B.
