Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a neurological emergency that may first present itself as new onset psychosis. The features of encephalitic psychosis may be indistinguishable from the psychiatric syndromes and high level of suspicion is needed for timely identification of AE. During the presentation I will review the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of AE. The timely approach to this devastating condition allows prevention of mortality and reduction of morbidity associated with AE.
