Diphtheria is a highly contagious acute infectious disease that caused by Corynebacterium diphtheria. Outbreak happens when thereâ??s one positive culture examination. In Indonesia especially in Balikpapan, the incidence rate increased from 2017-2018. To report an outbreak of diphtheria in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. A retrospective study was done in 3 patients who suspected as probable diphtheria and 161 closed contacts population in Balikpapan from January 2017â??January 2018. Two patients were admitted to hospital with probable diphtheria. All of them were â?¤15 years old. Two patients (66.7%) had incomplete immunization status. All of them (100%) had a positive microbiological examination result. The nose and throat culture examinations showed positive result in two of them with incomplete immunization status. The nutritional status was good. From the closed contacts 151 (72 %) was â?¤15 years old. Majority of them had complete immunization status and good nutritional status. Socio-cultural status in the area was the person who refused the vaccine. The immunization status plays an important role in the incidence of diphtheria. We must pay more attention to support the National Immunization Programs.
