Abstract :

COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing global concern and researchers are still gathering new findings to decode and understand SARS-CoV-2 infection and transmission during pregnancy. No reports encompass any conclusive confirmation of vertical transmission. Since early December 2019, the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) infections has been widespread in China and eventually spread globally. There are a few numbers of available published documents of COVID-19 occurring during pregnancy and showing the possibility of mother-fetal vertical transmission, there is a concern that the fetuses may be at risk of congenital COVID-19. Cases of fetal distress, premature delivery, PROM and multiple organ failure have been reported, as well as uncommon cases of fetal demise also reported. At the same time as scientists and clinicians continue to search for proof of vertical transmission, based on previous and our research findings it can be suggested that the complications during pregnancy with COVID-19 infections might not be due to the direct viral transmission but could be due to the fetal exposure to maternal inflammations or cytokine storm that translates into a complication of COVID-19.
