Abstract :

Introduction: Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your eye. The objective is to demonstrate that glaucoma is a systemic disease caused by energy imbalances.

Method: This study was centered in two case reports. 1º: Patient V.S ., 76, male, black, sought acupuncture due to pains in his legs (August 2006). He also presented constipation and felt cold in his lower limbs. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the diagnosis was blood and Kidney Yang Deficiency. Ten acupuncture sessions, twice a week, were performed. He presented great improvement in his leg pain and stopped treatment. One month later, he returned to be re-evaluated and described to have a surprising drop in his Intra Ocular Pressure (IOP) even though the physician was not aware of the patientâ??s glaucoma. He was performing glaucomaâ??s treatment for forty years, with no drop in the eye pressure, almost over 40. 2º: A female patient-53 had suffered chronic bilateral open angle glaucoma for 21 years. Her IOP was 20 mmHg and 26 mmHg for RE and LE, respectively. She performed twenty sessions of auricular acupuncture with mustard seeds.

Results: With the auricular acupuncture sessions, the intraocular pressure of the first patient dropped from 40 to 17. In the second case, after twenty sessions of auricular acupuncture her IOP decreased to 13 mmHg and 11 mmHg for the RE and LE, respectively. Gradually, the second patient was able to withdrawn the eye drops.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that glaucoma is only a reflex of a systemic energy imbalance. To achieve better results it is important to treat the root of the patientsâ?? problem (energy imbalances) and not only the symptoms (IOP).
