Abstract :

Peperomia pellucida has an antihypertensive effect and as a natural alternative for hypertension due to its economical use and fairly easy to obtain. P. pellucida is commonly used as herbal remedy for hypertension in rural areas and antihypertensive drugs nowadays such as the beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, among others, are very expensive. The researchers wanted to provide a natural alternative to these antihypertensive drugs and test the effectiveness of P. pellucidas cardiac glycosides through the administration of the drug to sixteen male Sprague-Dawley rats. Phyto-chemical tests included in the study are Keddes, Keller-Killiani and Liebermann Burchard for the presence of cardiac glycosides and used ethanol as the solvent for extraction. The rats were divided into four groups and received different doses of the crude drug extract. The strength for low dose given was 5mg/ kg, medium dose of 50 mg/kg, high dose of 300 mg/kg, and 1 mg/kg of metoprolol as the control drug. A non-invasive blood pressure apparatus was used to measure the decrease in blood pressure after inducing the crude drug extract. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference with the control drug. It can be concluded that the crude extract of P. pellucida is an effective antihypertensive alternative.
