Currently, probiotics have been gaining significant acceptance by all sectors and in all countries around the world. Less than 10% of consumers knew probiotics 8 years ago and now more than 85% of consumers know and most use probiotics. The probiotic market was estimated $10 million in 1979 and today it is more than $28 billion and expected to reach $37 billion by 2018. This has given us lots of challenges and opportunity. Probiotics are now used as foods and food supplements, and as drugs. For foods and food supplements, safety and quality issues are to be addressed by food safety and quality control scientists and researchers, and for drugs, all claims must be validated by clinical studies and approved by regulatory officials prior to marketing.
