Abstract :

Most of the population in the faraway localities of the region specially in hilly areas are still dependent upon the herbs for treatment of different ailments. The information about the medicinal properties of these herbs is verbal knowledge transfer from generation to generation without any authentication. A number of these important medicinal herbs are a part of daily diet as food items or as spices in the food. To authenticate the local medicinal application of these food items, we selected the locally used spices Carium carvi, Curcuma longa, Cinnamomum tamala, Zingiber officinale and evaluate their extract for the Anticholinesterase and Antibacterial activities. The extracts of C. carvi seed and C. longa showed promising results against clinically isolated skin related Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pyogenes pathogens. Similarly, the chloroform extract of three selected plants showed remarkable inhibition activity at different concentrations. The results provide an authentication of the effectiveness of these daily food items as remedy for various ailments and gives plausible reason of the good health of the people region without having sufficient modern health care facilities.
