Which child is malnourished -Caught between tools

Abstract :

Introduction: 146 million children under-five are underweight worldwide with mortality risk. Eight million indian children have severe acute malnutrition. Assessment of malnutrition is done with BMI, IAP grade, WHO Z score and SAM criteria? Objectives: � TO Evaluate the nutritional status by BMI, IAP Grade who and sam criteria. � TO Analyze percentage of malnutrition with various methods. Methodology: � Prospective study. � ICDS beneficiaries in karaikal. � October - April 2012. With needed consent , children in 25 icds centers in were clinically examined for evidence of malnutrition,. Anthropometry taken by standard method children classified with BMI, IAP grade and WA Z score. The results analyzed. Results: Total n: 500 males 53% females 47% BMI IAP GRADE WAZ SCORE WAZ Score TYPE n <3 severe 39(7.80%) 3to2 moderate 83(16.60 %) Discussion: Malnutrition detected in 30% by IAP Grading, 85 % by BMI, 21.6% by WAZ Score and 28% by Mid-arm circumference. Severe malnutrition 3% as per IAP, 7.6 % by WAZ score, 7.22% by BMI, Visible severe wasting was seen in 2 children, while pedal edema was not seen. Conclusion: This study shows that BMI & WAZ Score results are comparable for severe malnutrition but not with IAP grade. Mortality and morbidity can be reduced by assessment of the severity of malnutrition. Is mandatory for further action.

A. Agneeswaran did his MBBS at Vinayaka Mission kirupanandavariyar medical college, Salem under Tamil nadu DR.MGR MEDICAL UNIVERSITY in 2010. Along with his masters in Pediatrics he is a resident in Vinayaka Mission medical college karaikal under Vinayaka Mission university salem. He is interested in Social Pediatrics and nutrition. He has presented paper entitled ? TO PUNISH OR NOT ? in TamiInadu state branch IAP conference 2011 at Tirunelveli. He presented his paper on ?Efficacy of different anthropometrics tools in children ? in southzone IAP conference Pondicherry in 2012. His MD dissertation is based on nutritional anthropometry.
